Community Empowerment Ltd (itself a charitable society) specialises in offering free support in the creation and development of social enterprises based upon co-operative values & principles.
Whilst it is perfectly understandable that charities are considering trading activities to replace lost income, we should remind them that the Charity Commission place restrictions upon charities engaging in commercial activity. There can be a severe risk to the charity itself should things go wrong.
The solution is often to create a separate trading arm but most organisations do not realise the choice of options available to them.
We feel it is important to get the right trading structure to fit the aims of the charity or community organisation.
We therefore offer a range of around 30 legal and governance structures based upon model rules which have been pre-approved by the registrars and regulators, this also reduces the costs of incorporation.
Our free support also includes help with Business Plans if required.
We are able to offer free support thanks to sponsorship by The Co-operative Enterprise Hub.
We assess a groups plans and when considered potentially viable, an application is made to The Co-operative Enterprise Hub that pays for the support.
